The Sweet Summer Taste of Berries

Raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, currants -the fresh fruit of summer is finally ready at your local farms. Whether you plan to make jams, can or freeze these flavors to savor in the cold, winter months, now is the time to hit the fields. If nothing else, it's a must to pick the fruit for one or two sittings. The raspberries and blueberries sprinkled with a dash more sugar is simply gourmet!

(Our snapshot from berry picking includes five pints of raspberries, a pint of blueberries, and two pints of gooseberries.)

If your weekend schedule includes the Rock River Artists Open Studio Tour in South Newfane, VT, plan for a morning detour in Troy, NH. Three miles out of the center of Troy is one of the prettiest spots to berry pick. Monadnock Berries, a U-pick farm offers a wide selection of fruit for picking, goats, donkeys, a picnic area, gift store and spectacular scenery. Written up last year in Yankee Magazine, it made a spot on the Favorites page to check it out during this year's berry season.

(Our photos from a recent Monadnock Berries visit.)
