Everything is Turning Pumpkins

Fall is the perfect time to think design and testing your soil.

September is one of those shoulder months in New England; a little bit summer, a little bit fall. We aren’t quite ready to pack up the sandals and beach towels but we know pumpkins and leaf peeping, well, it’s literally just around the corner. It seems everyone wants a flash of orange so let’s slot in a fall #garden tip worthy of repeating – testing the soil.

Before you start thinking pumpkins, fall is the optimum time to test your soil. Why you ask? Here’s a quick snippet for those on the run. You have the winter to work and amend the soil. It’s also the best time to apply lime because it takes a few months for it to break down in the soil.  If spring is when you test the soil, stick to that schedule as it’s equally important to test at the same time each year for accurate results. But if you’re just getting started, fall marks that perfect spot on your calendar as an important ‘must do’ in the garden world. Need more soil testing tips? For those horticultural frequent flyers, you might already know the number one reason to test your soil. But for any newbies, it’s testing acidity and finding your soil’s pH sweet spot. So during this shoulder season, take a breather while everything is turning pumpkins but remember the importance of your soil. And one other fall tip? It’s the perfect time to think design. Just like your soil, you have the winter to work and amend your plans.
