Who done it -
Punxsutawney Phil

Anywhere you travel throughout Massachusetts, the recent snowstorms are undeniably raising havoc. When you contact companies outside of the snow range, particularly those fortunate to be in a warm and temperate climate, they sympathize and reluctantly chime in, “I don’t know how you live there.” But we all know weather can be a factor in any area but for now it’s all about the snow.
But let’s backtrack to Worcester and its snowiest city title. That was yesterday's news but here's today's. This little tidbit was buried in the local section of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette this morning. The Central Mass Flower Show dates slated for February 27th to March 1st, a local reprieve from winter has been cancelled. Due to 4 of the 8 major displays backing out, the show could not go on, at least for this season.
This is not the only major decision being made in the green industries’ trade shows. The recent announcement made at the New England Grows, a trademark in the industry announced at last week’s show that despite running for years during the first week of February, organizers said enough with that month of snow and Punxsutawney Phil. The show dates are slated for the first week of Dec. 2015 instead. Already there are grumbles in the green industry but it may be more systemic of so much more than recent weather that made these decisions.
But onto other news - if anyone heard about the yacht stuck in yesterday’s Boston traffic heading to this weekend’s boat show, the real question is how will this show fare? If the meteorologists are accurate on this next significant storm (not counting today’s – what’s a couple more inches) there's another potential foot predicted for our region.
Then there’s Valentine’s Day this Saturday. Let’s put another crimp in local businesses. Must be why the New Hampshire police were jokingly threatening to arrest Punxsutawney Phil. Who done it? Love the humor - blame the furry guy; can’t blame anyone else.
Oh, yes, to the more serious question - how do we live here? This as snowflakes fall – yeah, it’s those two plus inches or more but no big deal. Keep a sense of humor, if you can and pay attention to all the cancellations. One last big one and on a serious note - continue to support your local Massachusetts businesses as they shovel through this mess. And if you’re done with shoveling and you find no humor in the arrest of Punxsutawney Phil, it’s time for placing the seed orders. It may show up on the doorstep just in time for planting season. Counting the #daystillspring – 36 more to go!
