Entertaining in Fresh Air

Happy spring – it finally arrives this evening at 6:46 PM. Though some of us may not be able to run through the garden with shorts and sneaks, are your outdoor entertaining spaces ready for spring?

Are you ready for spring and outdoor entertaining?
One of the best things about shedding the long winter season is being able to entertain outdoors and take in that fresh air. Where will you be spending your spring, summer and fall mornings, afternoons, and evenings? If you want it to be outdoors entertaining with family and friends, get your landscape design plans in place. Here are a few outdoor spaces designed by Bilowz Associates Inc. to get you thinking fresh air and spring! Feel free to browse our portfolios to see a full line-up of surroundings, elements, features, details and visions.

As Gustav Mahler musically quipped, “Spring won’t let me stay in this house any longer! I must get out and breath the air deeply again.” Make sure there’s a place to relax, entertain and breathe in the air deeply again.

Why We Should Plan Now

Why plan now?
A simple quote accompanied by a collage of our designs and I shall be on my way. Tom Turner’s words resonate why landscape design is critical to the lives we lead. “In town and in country there must be landscapes where we can walk in safety, pick fruit, cycle, work, sleep, swim, listen to the birds, bask in the sun, run through the trees and laze beside cool waters.”
Laze beside cool waters...
Run through the trees...
That’s why planning now during the earth’s natural sleeping cycle makes perfect design sense. Psychologically we always allow the rhythm of spring to get one step ahead of us. We wake up and see the first Crocus pop and all those restless garden souls of winter come out in force.
Bask in the sun...
Listen to the birds...
Why wait until spring cycles around this year? Plan ahead so there shall be ‘landscapes where we can walk in safety, pick fruit, cycle, work, sleep, swim, listen to the birds, bask in the sun, run through the trees and laze beside cool waters.”
Plan now for spring.

Envision your perfect outdoor living space during the winter months so your plans are shovel ready come spring.
Envision your perfect outdoor living space.

Where Creativity is...

A Design thought on this Thursday
In his book, Creativity Inc., Overcoming The Unseen Forces That Stand In The Way Of True Inspiration, Ed Catmull, President of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation defines it best about where creativity is.  “When it comes to creative inspiration, job titles and hierarchy are meaningless.” As Catmull points out, "Everybody has the potential to be creative - whatever form that creativity takes - and that to encourage such development is a noble thing." What will you be creating today?

Distinctive Design Trends for 2014

Garden Media recently released its 2014 Garden Trends Report. One of the many garden trends noted in their press release related to design. Here’s what they had to say – “Neat clean lines are out as explosions of color in fractional shapes like triangles, circles and squares dominate design.”

What does it take to be ahead of the trends? It often requires what author and inspirational speaker Mark Sanborn recently stated in his newsletter - being ‘distinctive’ rather than just ‘excellent.’ He points out that, “Success in 2013 and beyond isn’t about being excellent, good or even great. It is about being distinctive. Excellence is relatively easy to accomplish. A good copycat watches what the industry leader is doing and then does the same things…The biggest problem with excellence is that it isn’t distinctive.”

So back to this design trend of breaking neat clean lines. It takes testing the conventional to create great design. It requires removing oneself from that comfort zone and taking the leap beyond the usual to break those conventional lines. When the ‘biggest problem with excellence is that it isn’t distinctive’, don’t roam with the copycats. As Mark Sanborn points out, “Excellence is a moving target. Today’s “excellent” can be next month’s “mediocre.”

These final Friday thoughts, which echo our design philosophy - break away from the conventional; always be distinctive.
