Fall Wellness Check

While fall is often the second best time of the year to plant, it’s the perfect time to run a wellness check in your garden. And what’s the number one testament to a thriving landscape? Well, yeah, it’s that obvious answer but one we take for granted on if it’s up to snuff – it’s our soil. When it comes to wellness checks, it’s a bit repetitive but fall is the very best, optimum time to test your soil. So why and what should you do when it comes to this task? There’s no reinventing the wheel on this one. I offered some bullet points in my April 4, 2013 post, ‘The Sweet Spot’. It’s time for a refresher course on one of the most underestimated but most critical components of our garden – its soil.

As Janet Gallagher Nestor points out, “Prolonged stress causes the human body to make adaptations so it can continue to serve you at a functional level. The more stress, the more adaptations.” Just like the human body, your soil needs to be checked for prolonged stress. And fall is the perfect time to do this wellness check.

Use the beautiful Asters as a symbolic reminder – it’s time to test the soil. And if you rely on the beauty of the gardens and your landscape to give you a bit of natural lift, Nestor once again reminds us, “Healing is achieved through turning on the light of your soul and allowing it to shine.” For those that find healing in our gardens, make sure to keep the soil healthy; wellness check 101.
